Kerala, the 1990s. Mini Balachandran is a homemaker. But with both her father and brother dead in an accident, she is left with no other choice but to come on board as the managing director of Dhanwantari Herbal Products Limited, their Kochi-based Ayurveda company. One day, out of the blue, covert attempts at a takeover are discovered. Dhanwantari's shares are being bought at a furious pace; the players-unknown.
Tensions simmer. The company must be saved. A battle is at hand.
Perhaps the most admired financial thriller ever to be written in Malayalam and winner of the 1993 Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, K.L. Mohana Varma's Ohari is an epic, edge-of-the-seat tale about what it takes for the feisty Mini Balachandran to fight an aggressive takeover bid. Translated skilfully into English by Ministhy S., it is a gripping ride through the greed and guile that drive the stock market and a celebration of the indomitable spirit of women who refuse to bow down in a sensational game of wits.
K.L. Mohana Varma is the multi-award-winning author of over seventy-five books, in Malayalam and English, a number of which have been translated into multiple Indian languages. Of his works, Ohari, the first financial thriller ever to be written in Malayalam literature, remains a milestone. K.L. Mohana Varma won the prestigious Kerala Sahitya Akademi award in 1993 for the novel. He lives in Cochin.
Ministhy S. works as an IAS officer in the Uttar Pradesh cadre. A literary translator too, she translates between three languages: Malayalam, English and Hindi. Her translations, including those of works by V.J. James, Benyamin, Sheela Tomy, Sonia Rafeek and K.R. Meera, have been shortlisted for the JCB Prize for Literature and the Crossword Book Jury award, and made it to the longlists for the VoW Book Award for English Translation, Green Book Award and DSC Prize for South Asian Literature. She has also transliterated four cantos (Sundar Kanda, Kishkindha Kanda, Aranya Kanda and Lanka Kanda) from Tulsidas's Sri Ramcharitmanas into English.
Ministhy lives in Lucknow.
