For thousands of years, the Upani?ads have shaped India’s spiritual imagination and defined the foundations of Vedanta philosophy. In this magnificent new translation, Nachiketa Jha brings to life ten key Upani?ads—Aitareya, Isa, Ka?ha, Kena, Chandogya, Taittiriya, Prasna, B?hadara?yaka, Ma??ukya, and Mu??aka—together with a lucid, deeply informed commentary grounded in Sa?karacarya’s classical exegesis.
Clear, faithful, and eminently readable, this edition reveals the Upani?ads not as remote metaphysical treatises but as vibrant explorations of consciousness, ethics, reality, and the self. Jha’s substantial introduction maps their central ideas—Brahman, atman, maya, pra?a, knowledge, and liberation—and situates them within contemporary debates on consciousness and science, showing why these ancient works continue to be relevant in the twenty-first century.
Whether read for their philosophical rigour, spiritual insight, or literary beauty, the Upani?ads offer a transformative encounter with some of humanity’s oldest and most profound enquiries—who are we, and what is the ultimate truth? This meticulous compendium is an invitation to ‘sit close and listen’, in the old tradition of upa-ni-?ad.
