Roshi Philip Kapleau, born in 1912, was a teacher of Zen Buddhism. Some of his works include Straight to the Heart of Zen and Zen: Dawn in the West. Kapleau was born in the US, where he studied law. He became an accomplished court reporter and went to Japan to cover the Tokyo War Crimes Trials. There, he became intrigued by Zen Buddhism. He trained for thirteen years and was then ordained by Hakuun Yasutani in 1965. This gave him permission to teach, so he returned to the US and founded the Rochester Zen Center in 1966. He taught there for almost four decades. Kapleau passed away in 2004.
