Marjane Satrapi is an Iranian-French graphic novelist, illustrator, film director, and children's book author best known for her acclaimed graphic memoir Persepolis, which depicts her childhood and early adult years in Iran during and after the Islamic Revolution. Born in Rasht, Iran, she grew up in a politically engaged family and experienced firsthand the cultural and political upheavals that shaped her storytelling. After moving to France, she developed a distinctive voice in graphic literature, blending personal narrative with historical commentary. Her works often explore themes of identity, exile, freedom, and resistance, using stark black-and-white illustration to powerful emotional effect. Persepolis was later adapted into an award-winning animated film, which she co-directed. Satrapi has also created other graphic works such as Embroideries and Chicken with Plums, and continues to contribute to cinema and literature, earning international recognition for her bold, honest, and deeply human storytelling style and voice worldwide acclaim today
