Rudraneil Sengupta is an Indian journalist and author renowned for his in-depth reporting on sports, culture, and social issues. He holds a master's degree in English from Jadavpur University, Kolkata, and began his journalism career in television, focusing on sports coverage. In 2010, he joined Mint, a leading Indian business newspaper, where he served as the deputy editor of Lounge, the publication's weekend feature magazine. His work often explores the intersection of sports with broader societal themes, including gender and human rights.
Sengupta is best known for his book Enter the Dangal: Travels through India's Wrestling Landscape, published in 2016. The book offers a compelling narrative on the rise of wrestling in India, particularly highlighting the empowerment of women in a traditionally male-dominated sport. Through vivid storytelling and meticulous research, he sheds light on the unique social and cultural impact of wrestling in the country.
His journalistic excellence has been recognized with several awards. In 2008, he received the Ramnath Goenka Award for Excellence in Journalism for his documentary on river rafting in India. Additionally, his investigative work on gender testing of female athletes earned him the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) award for excellence in reporting on human rights issues in 2015.
Beyond his work in sports journalism, Sengupta has also reported on crime stories, bringing attention to various facets of justice and societal structures. His diverse portfolio includes contributions to platforms like Hindustan Times, The Times of India, and Fountain Ink Magazine, among others. Currently based in New Delhi, he continues to write and engage with issues related to sports and culture, maintaining a prominent voice in Indian journalism.
