Sumit Sarkar is an eminent Indian historian, scholar and author best known for his influential research on modern Indian history, particularly the freedom movement, nationalism, colonialism and the development of political and social movements in India. He has made significant contributions to the study of Indian nationalism and the complex relationship between colonial rule, popular politics and social change. Sarkar has taught history at the University of Delhi and has been associated with some of the most important developments in modern Indian historiography. His scholarship is distinguished by its detailed examination of political movements alongside the experiences and participation of ordinary people. Among his widely recognised works are The Swadeshi Movement in Bengal, 1903–1908, Modern India, 1885–1947, Writing Social History and Beyond Nationalist Frames: Postmodernism, Hindu Fundamentalism, History. Through his books, essays and academic work, Sarkar has played an important role in shaping contemporary understanding of India’s colonial past, nationalism, social transformation and political history
