Umar Khalid is an Indian scholar, researcher, and former student activist whose academic work is rooted in the study of history and tribal societies. He completed his undergraduate degree in history from Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi, followed by an MA and M.Phil from the History Department at Jawaharlal Nehru University. His M.Phil research focused on the Hos of Singhbhum, and he later earned a PhD from JNU’s Centre for Historical Studies, with his doctoral work examining land, power, and governance among Adivasi communities in Jharkhand from the colonial period to the present. Before his arrest, Khalid was known for his involvement in student politics at JNU as part of the Democratic Students Union and for his academic research. On 14 September 2020, he was arrested by the Delhi Police Special Cell as an alleged conspirator in the Delhi riots case, with charge sheets alleging meetings with Tahir Hussain and Khalid Saifi during the Shaheen Bagh protests. On 5 January 2026, the Supreme Court denied bail, and he remains in Tihar Jail awaiting trial.
