‘There is more to Manto than “Thanda Gosht”, “Khol Do” or “Kaali Shalwar”. While these stories have been most anthologised and are therefore most well-known, they are by no means representative of Manto’s writings. Unfortunately, it is these stories that are understood, in popular perception, to define Manto ... I have chosen stories that “spoke” to me at some level and I wanted others to “hear” what I could... I am sure there are be stories here, such as “Urinal” or “New Year” that will be new. Taken together, this collection will hopefully give you a glimpse into Manto’s remarkably eclectic oeuvre.’ —From the introduction by Rakhshanda Jalil.

In Bismillah and Other Stories, the searing brilliance of Saadat Hasan Manto—one of South Asia’s most provocative and powerful storytellers—comes alive in a fresh translation. This masterful collection, rendered into English by acclaimed translator Rakhshanda Jalil, captures Manto’s unflinching gaze on the human condition, his razor-sharp wit, and his uncompromising honesty.

Set against the backdrop of a turbulent subcontinent—partition, poverty, patriarchy— these stories reveal characters caught in the moral chaos of their times. With piercing insight and dark wit, Manto explores the complexities of faith, desire and human frailty against the backdrop of a divided subcontinent. This brilliant collection captures Manto’s fearless voice and timeless relevance. A powerful read for anyone drawn to stories that provoke, disturb, and linger.

‘Here [Manto] lies buried—and buried in his breast are all the secrets of the art of storytelling. Even now weighed down by mounds of earth, he is wondering if he is the greater storyteller or God!’

‘Here [Manto] lies buried—and buried in his breast are all the secrets of the art of storytelling. Even now weighed down by mounds of earth, he is wondering if he is the greater storyteller or God!’—Epitaph written by Manto for himself shortly before his death.

PRAISE FOR RAKHSHANDA JALIL ‘Jalil’s book ripples like a river with couplets of all shades. She uses Urdu as a mirror to present many a lament and the reader must steal time to savour the poetry on every page of prose.’ —THE SCROLL

‘Jalil’s labour of love consists of using shayari aphoristically, of taking a line or two out of their original contexts and applying them, in sadness and in hope, to our broken present. Like T.S. Eliot in The Waste Land, she uses the fragments of old poetry to “shore against my ruins”.’ —OUTLOOK

About the Author

Manto’s legacy endures through powerful stories that continue to provoke thought and stir conscience decades after his death.

Dr Rakhshanda Jalil is a writer, translator and literary historian. She has published close to fifty books which include edited volumes, translations, biographies, as well as her own short stories, essays and full-length critical texts.
