About the Author

Charlotte Brontë was born in a village in Yorkshire, England on April 21, 1816. Her father was Irish and her mother was Cornish. She was one of six children. As children, Charlotte and her siblings read a lot and created their own imaginary worlds. Brontë wrote her first known poem at the age of 13. Jane Eyre, her second novel, is considered her best work. Apart from writing, she also worked as a teacher and a governess. This helped her write about both of these professions in Jane Eyre. Her two sisters, Emily and Anne, were also writers. All three of them used male pseudonyms to get published, because it was harder for women writers to get published in those days.
