Ashish Sharma's journey as a self-taught, award-winning photojournalist is an intriguing tale woven with the threads of passion, commitment and a profound connection to his roots in Kashmir. Born and raised in the heart of Srinagar, the bustling city in the lap of a picturesque valley, he however grew up at a time when
insurgency was at its peak. Having experienced the brunt of militancy firsthand, he felt compelled to document life in Kashmir during its dark and gory years. He picked up the camera at a young age and began photographing Kashmir in its raw, unfiltered form.
What sets his photography apart is not just its visual appeal but its ability to narrate the unfolding history of Jammu and Kashmir. Each photograph serves as a witness to the passage of time, encapsulating the shifting expressions and body language of a land that is, was and will be a silent testament to stories untold, moments preserved and the enduring spirit woven into every landscape and face. Ashish's keen eye captures the nuanced contrasts between then and now, offering viewers a unique perspective on the transformation of Jammu and Kashmir.
Ashish's work on and from Kashmir has been published in various international publications including the New York Times, Der Speigel and the Guardian.
Currently based in New Delhi, Ashish works as Deputy Photo Editor for Open magazine, where he covers breaking news, politics and socioeconomic events across India. Many of his images have been used for producing covers for the magazine.
