Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was one of the most important writers of the Victorian era. Born in Dorset, England, Hardy is best known for his powerful novels set in the fictional region of Wessex, inspired by the rural landscapes of southwest England where he grew up. His works explore themes of love, fate, social convention, and the struggles of individuals against rigid moral and class structures.
Hardy first gained recognition as a novelist with works such as Far from the Madding Crowd, and later produced some of the most influential works in English literature, including The Mayor of Casterbridge and Tess of the d'Urbervilles. Although controversial in their time for their candid treatment of social and moral issues, Hardy's novels are now widely regarded as masterpieces of English fiction.
