The Cold War took place after World War II. It was essentially a standoff between the Western Bloc, which consisted of the United States and its allies and the Eastern Bloc, which was made up of the Soviet Union and its allies under the Warsaw pact. The Cold War: A New History is an analysis of the events that took place during the Cold War.

The Cold War: A New History is a book that provides the reader with a comprehensive view of the Cold War. The author, a distinguished historian, illuminates the struggle between the US and the Soviet Union, which lasted more than half a century. The shrewd judgments involved by politicians on both sides are discussed in this book. The various major events that took place during that era include the Korean War, the Truman doctrine, the Cuban missile crisis and the fall of the Berlin Wall.

This book provides the reader with insights into the Cold war. It takes a look into various prominent individuals, their ideas, the decisions taken by them, narrow escapes, lurking dangers and lost opportunities, all of which were the various colours required to paint the picture that was the Cold War. The book believes that the standoff between the two nations was mainly because of the Soviet Union’s will to dominate, which was driven by a dictatorship.

In this book, one can see how the various American Presidents from Dwight Eisenhower to Richard Nixon struggled with law, democratic accountability and morality while creating their foreign policy to tackle the Soviet Union. In the book, credit is given to visionaries such as Pope John Paul II, Deng Xiaoping and Lech Walesa for helping end the Cold War.

The book is a well-written account of the events that took place in the Cold War from the viewpoint of an eminent historian. The Cold War: A New History was published by Penguin USA in 2006. This reprint edition is available in paperback.
