About the Author
Edith nesbit was born in Kennington, Surrey, England on the 15th of August, 1858. Her childhood was spent travelling between places like Brighton, Buckinghamshire, Germany, Spain, France with her family. The nesbits settled down later in Halstead, Kent and this setting inspired nesbit to pen down her classic children’s novel, ‘The Railway Children’ in the year 1906. nesbit embarked on her journey as a writer in the early 1880s. She is widely regarded as one of the earliest modern writers for children as she moved away from the fictional universe and depicted reality in her works. She published as many as forty children’s books that included novels, short stories and picture books. ‘The Railway Children’, ‘Five Children and It’, ‘The Revolt of the Toys’, ‘The Story of the Treasure Seekers’, ‘The Wouldbegoods’ and ‘The Enchanted Castle’ are among her best known works in children’s literature. Apart from being a prolific writer, nesbit had a keen interest in socialism and was one of the co-founders of the Fabian Society, a socialist organization. nesbit also wrote poems and published short stories and novels for adults. She passed away on May 4, 1924.
