The Temples of Mandi is a study of the temple architecture and sculpture of a picturesque temple town situated in Himachal Pradesh. The historical processes that were at work in this one-time capital of the princely state of Mandi are concisely delineated as are the polity of the ancient state, the social patterns, and the central role that religion played in the lives of the common people. For it is essential to understand the diverse influences that Mandi, bearing the outward aspect of remoteness, was open to, lying as it did along a trade route.
Based on extensive fieldwork, this volume provides measurements of temples and sculptures, ground plans and sectional drawings to illustrate the general layout and elevational aspects of the temples. A substantial number of photographs adorn the pages of this assiduously researched book.
Regrettably, the ravages of time, neglect, and vandalism have taken a toll on our cultural heritage, leaving few monuments intact. This meticulous documentation is, therefore, a crucial endeavour, preserving not only a visual record but also providing a profound connection to our rich history and traditions.
