Valmiki’s Ramayana is condensed and greatly simplified for children in two volumes by Sunita Pant Bansal. Each volume has free-flowing, colourful, situational illustrations. The special feature of the book is that the main characters of the story are depicted pictorially throughout the text. The child identifies the pictures and reads on. This see-and-read technique helps children to remember the stories better. By the end of the two volumes, the child will have read and understood the entire Ramayana. Volume 1 narrates Prince Rama’s story, his birth, his family, and how he, his wife, and younger brother had to spend fourteen years in the forest because of his father’s promise to his stepmother. While in the forest, Rama and his brother kill many demons and help many people. They lead an adventurous life until the unfortunate kidnapping of Rama’s wife by the demon-king Ravana. Brave Rama sets out with his brother to find her. Their exciting journey, which leads them to find Rama’s wife, is narrated in Volume 2.
