He walked to Istanbul from the Baltic coast, and wrote Lords of the Horizons: A History of the Ottoman Empire, and five novels in the Yashim series. He received the Edgar Award for Best Novel The Janissary Tree, the first in the series, which has been translated into over forty languages. He lives in Dorset.
