Review

Intertidal is a magnificent achievement; a book that sings and pulses with the singular, generous vision of its remarkable author. Yuvan Aves takes the reader deep into the intertidal zone; that in-between space where land meets sea--and also where being meets world. This at once a work of detailed, shimmering natural history by an exceptional field naturalist, and a profound meditation on what it means to be human--and more-than-human--in this damaged, astonishing world of ours. Its intensity of vision and stylistic flair reminds me of J.A. Baker's The Peregrine, and its democratic, inclusive account of ecology reminds me of Nan Shepherd's The Living MountainIntertidal is a wondrous work of walking, seeing and thinking, which forms part of the present, thrilling resurgence of contemporary Indian nature writing, along with books such as Neha Sinha's Wild and Wilful and Arati Kumar-Rao's Marginlands. Please read it! -- Robert Macfarlane, author of Underland: A Deep Time Journey

The voice of a new generation of Indian naturalists...Ardent, informed, unafraid to confront the mess we've made-and are still making-of our landscapes. -- Pradip Krishen, author of Trees of Delhi

To truly recognise all that surrounds us, we need to find beauty within. Yuvan Aves shines a light on this truth. Through his interactions with the tiniest life forms and observations of every tidal shift, Yuvan paints a landscape of beauty and fragility. Every word is an expression of love for creation that also beseeches us to awaken to the ecological crisis that is at our doorstep. -- T.M. Krishna, musician, author, activist

Yuvan Aves's writing is emotive, immersive, almost pictorial in its beauty.Intertidal will resonate with everyone.

Do read Intertidal for hope, for joy, for wisdom and for courage and to fall in love with the rain, the oceans, the trees and the miracles that live and breathe all around us.

-- Dia Mirza, actor, producer, Goodwill Ambassador, United Nations Environment Programme

A wonderful and wonderfully talented new voice, gentle and poetic, subtle, watchful and observant, writing very much in the tradition of Robert Macfarlane and haunted by the ghosts of Barry Lopez and J.A Baker. This is a startlingly brilliant and moving debut, written in pellucid prose as clear and inviting as a rock pool, as calming as the lapping of the sea on the shore, and as hopeful as a new dawn on the Coromandel coast. -- William Dalrymple, author of The Anarchy

Intertidal is a book of hope. A book of courage. A moving narrative incorporating subtle solutions to many seemingly intractable problems that beset our world and therefore us all. Naturalist-author, Yuvan Aves, takes us on a lyrical, meditative journey through coasts, estuaries and marshes, possibly the most human-abused ecosystems on the planet. Yet, very gently, offers healing messages and insights for our wounded biosphere and for the internal strengths of young and old. -- Bittu Sahgal, founder editor, Sanctuary Asia

Braided both with the internal world of the author's meditations and the external world of urban nature, the book reads simultaneously like a diary and an encyclopedia. There is a barefoot, lived-in quality to the descriptions of sea, marsh, forest and all that lives there-I lost myself in this book and devoured it in great gulps. There is much to savour here: with urgent, bated breath, this book shows you why saving nature is preserving our mental health. By the time you exhale, you the reader, are likely to be changed. -- Neha Sinha, conservation biologist and author of Wild and Wilful

Yuvan's gaze is unprecedented, his each sentence a kaleidoscope restoring the lush connectedness of the ecological, political, psychological, philosophical, scientific and pedagogical, rightfully allowing these ways of seeing their mutually illuminating simultaneity; restoring, in other words, our intimacy with our most essential, most endangered shared truths. Intertidal is a masterfully crafted invitation to pull close-in solidarity, friendship and studenthood-with our winged, pawed, petalled and shored sisters, to learn from their ancient, patient radicalisms, and to be transformed. To walk Tamil Nadu's shores with Yuvan's deep-seeing gaze for a guide is a privilege-a gift which will leave its every recipient nourished, breathing deeper and more alive. -- Rega Jha, former editor-in-chief, Buzzfeed India

Weaving stories of small creatures where the ocean meets land, Yuvan Aves takes us on a journey through truth, beauty, and a relentless search for answers. This book offers hope, not only for individuals but for our species. A joy to read. -- Pranay Lal, author of Indica

This is a book of sensuous attention and tropical affection for the only thing that remains--this duniya, this nearest life. -- Sumana Roy, author of How I Became a Tree
